Get started
Add the Conversation Bot to your website.
Works with your existing website. No rebuild required. Get your code from Growth Desk, then pick the option that matches your site.
Before you start
Get your code from Growth Desk.
Your code is personal to your business. It connects the chat on your site to your Growth Desk.
Rather not do it yourself? On the same tab, ask us to install it. It's free.
Open Business Profile
Sign in at app.digitalwhale.io and choose Business Profile in the menu.
Open the Install chat tab
Your code is under Copy your code.
Copy it, or send it on
Tap Copy code. If someone else looks after your site, tap Email it to my web person and they get the code with instructions.
Check it is live
Once the code is on your site, open any page of it. The same panel notices within a few seconds and shows where the chat is live.
Option A
WordPress: use the plugin.
The Digital Whale Chat plugin adds the chat to every page.
Easiest: download it from Growth Desk (Business Profile → Install chat). That copy already has your code, so you only upload and activate it. Downloaded it here instead? Follow these steps.
Download the plugin
Save digital-whale-chat.zip. Leave it zipped.
Upload it to WordPress
In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the file and click Install Now.
Activate it
Click Activate Plugin.
Paste your code
Go to Settings → Digital Whale Chat, paste the code you copied and click Save. The plugin keeps only your Business ID, so pasting the whole line is fine.
Open your site
Visit any page. The chat button appears in the bottom corner.
Option B
Any other website: paste your code.
Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, Webflow or a site built by hand. Add your code once, in the part every page shares, and the chat appears on every page.
Someone else runs your site? In Growth Desk, tap Email it to my web person and they get your code and where to paste it.
<script src="https://api.digitalwhale.io/widget/widget.js" data-tenant="your-business-id" defer></script>Example. Use the code from your Growth Desk: it has your own Business ID.
- Any website
- Paste it just before the closing </body> tag of the template every page uses.
- Wix
- Settings → Custom Code → Add Custom Code. Choose All pages and Body - end, then publish.
- Squarespace
- Settings → Advanced → Code Injection. Paste it in the Footer box and save.
- Shopify
- Online Store → Themes → Edit code. Open theme.liquid and paste it just before </body>.
- Webflow
- Site settings → Custom code. Paste it in Footer code, save and publish.
- Google Tag Manager
- Tags → New → Custom HTML. Paste it, trigger it on All Pages, then submit and publish.
Questions about adding the bot.
Will it change how my site looks?
It adds a chat button in the bottom corner. It loads in the background and does not change your site's own styles.
Do I add it to every page?
No. Add it once where every page shares code (the footer, or your site builder's custom code setting) and it shows on every page.
How do I know it worked?
Open your site and look for the chat button. In Growth Desk, Business Profile → Install chat shows where the chat has been seen.
Where do I find my Business ID?
In your code, it is the text in quotes after data-tenant=. Your code is in Growth Desk, under Business Profile → Install chat. With the WordPress plugin you can paste the whole code; it finds the ID on its own.
I pasted the code and installed the plugin. Will the chat show twice?
No, it shows once. You can still remove the pasted code to keep your site tidy.
Stuck? Ask the Conversation Bot.
Tell it what your site is built with. If you need a person, it arranges that for you.
